Health Policy and Management

Global, African and South African Health Systems

We have taken a specific interest, in collaboration with partners on the impact of global health initiatives and donor harmonisation on health systems in Africa. We are also interested in health and development and African continental health policies and strategies. In South Africa the interest is in the transformation of the South African Health system and the policy options and alternatives towards achieving equitable access for all South Africans.

Human Resources for Health

At one level there is an interest in human resources policies and strategies to overcome the health workforce crisis facing the continent, including skill mix and task shifting. At the operational level of HR management and governance our main interest has been in skill mix and morale and retention. From a production perspective the track focuses on matching educational needs and academic programmes to the health system challenges and meeting the demand for enriching learning approaches.

Operational Management of Health Services

One of the challenges facing African Health Systems is the gap between policies and plans and their effective implementation in districts, hospitals and health centres. Around this core, we explore different issues at different times, including the application of health economic evaluations at this level.

Health Services and HIV/AIDS

The main interests are around continental leadership at one level and at another on evaluation of HIV/AIDS services with a particular focus on Home Based Care and adherence to treatment and on carers practice in relation to guidelines and leakages in care consequent on this.
